Detection & Diagnosis

There are several methods to test for dry eyes. The doctor will first determine the underlying cause by measuring the production, evaporation rate and quality of the tear film. Special drops that highlight problems that would be otherwise invisible are particularly helpful to diagnose the presence and extent of the dryness.

Schirmer Test

This test is used to assess tear production and is helpful in treating dry eye syndrome. Tiny paper tabs are inserted in the lower lids and removed after a few minutes. When the tab is removed, the dampened area is measured in millimeters. This helps the doctor determine the presence or extent of a dry eye condition.
